More in Maine

Well, I guess we are certifiably now insane. 18 dead and scores wounded in Maine and we are insane. Expecting something new to happen, that this madness of gunning down daily life will change if we don’t change? The “person of interest” may have been hearing voices (what has happened with any mental health intervention and thus too allowing gun ownership to the unstable?) but what voices do we hear?

I am bereft, but what am I missing? What do the Second Amendment people say that I just don’t hear? What do they see that I don’t see? Could I be that myopic? Could I be that dense? Does a nation’s Constitution, however rightly or wrongly interpreted, just gun down everything in its path and we have no power over it? Of course we are (and necessarily must be) a “nation of laws,” but we have turned this one, this law, into not just a monster that devours its own children. It doesn’t carry the weight that it used to, but the word that best describes this creature is Idol. This Amendment is worse than a monster, it is an Idol. For people who profess religions of a one, true God this should make us shutter and run for cover. But no, idolatry is for ancient times. We have come of age. We are civilized. We legalize things that profit us, no matter the exploitation or murderous ways.

I have this feeling now about the not if but when. What is this madness?

Get real and take action. Universal Background Checks. Ban Assault Style Weapons. And vote. Vote out of office these, I’ll be nice and not revert to the very thing that drives violence, people, who will not allow us to change.

Now we bury more dead. Then we act to change.
